COURSE DESCRIPTION
The course on fiction I introduces the student to the genre of novel and
Fiction II provides the scope for an in-depth study of a novel. The novel
is a literary form that is perhaps more ‘visible’ to the public eye, as
cinematic adaptations or TV programs based on novels are very common.
However literary appreciation of the novel calls for rich reading
experience and sensitive reading skills. Novels which draw from the
experiences of whole generations and societies will open to the student new
vistas in looking at the world around him/her and making sense of the
complex interplay between humans and the society. It brings to the students
an ability to look at others and thus understanding themselves in a deeper
way. The novel literature of English has much to offer to the student by
way of developing literary sense, critical evaluation skills and complex
modes of expression.Title of Course

SHORT STORY
Second

First
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Short story is a literary genre that took shape mainly in the 20th century
and it reflects the mind of modern times better than other genres. That its
evolution was molded by such modern day phenomena as miniaturization and
fast pace of life is reflected in its structure, style and size. In
comparison to the novel’s wide canvas that touches whole societies or
periods of history, the short story has developed as the inner voice of the
isolated and alienated individual in the modern day society. The short
story thus presents to the student extremely individualistic and varied
voices from the world. It opens up the human mind and how it responds to
the cataclysms of the world as an individual. This course is expected to
provide an introduction to the extremely rich short story literature of
English.Title of Course

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Literature produced in America and in recent times, Australia, Canada and
India have contributed significantly to the development of English
literature. These literary traditions have developed their own styles,
thematic features and linguistic peculiarities. Literature translated into
English from different languages form another important part of literature.
The study of English literature becomes complete only when these literary
traditions are also introduced to the student. -
